NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Coast Guard has called off the search for the woman that jumped off of the Carnival Valor Wednesday.
Efforts ended at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, after the14 hour search over more than 2,514 square nautical miles according to the U.S. Coast Guard 8th District.
Petty Officer Gabriel Wisdom said Wednesday the "man-overboard" notification went out to the Coast Guard's 8th District and Coast Guard Sector New Orleans at 3 p.m.
A launch of an Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 aircrew was coordinated to help with the search efforts, said The Advocate | Times-Picayune.
A 32-year-old woman went overboard about 150 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River off the Louisiana coast.
A passenger took a picture of the woman being restrained after a disturbance near the pool, shortly before she ended up in the water.
“I was smoking at the top deck and then all of a sudden, a saw this woman yelling, and it looked like she got in trouble at the hot tub,” the passenger who did not want to be identified said. “Security asked her to calm down. I know that she was really hysterical when they were taking her to the cabin.”
Chief Warrant Officer Tricia Eldredge, Command Duty Officer at Sector New Orleans released a statement:
“The decision to suspend a search-and-rescue case is never one we come to lightly. We offer our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time.”
