HOUSTON - One man was hit and killed by a car Tuesday night while fleeing another wreck.

Authorities say a man in a car rear-ended an 18-wheeler on Wallisville Road near Crosby Freeway.

Investigators say the driver of the car, identified as a 46-year-old man, ran from the crash scene and onto the Crosby Freeway where he was hit by two other cars. They say he left behind his two children, ages 4 and 5, when he fled.

The man died at the scene.

The children were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Officials say the 4-year-old girl suffered severe injuries, and the 5-year-old boy did not appear to suffer any significant injuries. Neither of them were in booster seats, police said.

The drivers of the two other cars stopped after the man was hit. Police say they will not face charges.
