Man dies in overnight apartment fire in southwest Houston

Firefighters entered the apartment and found the male victim in the backroom closet.

HOUSTON — An apartment fire in southwest Houston left one man dead and three families without a home overnight.

This happened around 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the Glen Willow Apartments, located in the 10600 block of S. Post Oak near Willow Bend.

Houston firefighters say when they first arrived at the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from a second-floor apartment.

Neighbors told them a man was still inside his apartment.

"I was trying to get the door in and let some of the smoke out and try to get him out of there," one neighbor said.

Firefighters entered the apartment and found the male victim in the backroom closet. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead from smoke inhalation.

Fire officials say they believe he was the only resident living in the apartment. At least three units were suffered water and smoke damage.

Fire officials have asked the American Red Cross to assist those families affected.

Arson is investigating the cause of the fire.
