Teen drowns after falling out of kayak at Lake Conroe, sheriff's office says

Deputies said the teen went out on the lake but without a life vest. He fell out of the kayak into 50-degree rough water.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — A 17-year-old drowned in Lake Conroe over the weekend after he fell out of a kayak, according to Walker County Sheriff’s Office.

This happened just before 2 p.m. Sunday after the teen set out in his kayak near the FM 1375 bridge in the Sam Houston National Forest, which is part of Walker County.

Deputies said the teen went out on the lake but without a life vest. He fell out of the kayak into 50-degree rough water.

Witnesses heard his call for help and tried to rescue him. However, he went under.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office, New Waverly Fire Department, and Texas Game Wardens responded to the scene. After several attempts, the Montgomery County Pct. 1 Lake Patrol Dive Team finally found a body believed to be his around 9 p.m. by using sonar.

This is the first drowning of the year on Lake Conroe. 2021 was the deadliest year with six drownings reported.

Last year, there were no drownings.
