Report of weapon leads to lockdown at Kingwood High School

After investigating, police said there was not a weapon on campus. The lockdown stemmed from a fight and one student reportedly threatened to shoot another student.

HOUSTON — Kingwood High School was on lockdown Monday morning after the district said there were reports of a weapon on campus. After an investigation, police learned there wasn't a weapon on campus, but it started with a fight between students.

The first report of a weapon on campus came in at around 10:15 a.m. to Houston police.

HPD worked with Humble ISD police to investigate and when they pieced everything together, they learned that two students were arguing and one reportedly threatened to shoot the other.

Police said the kid who was allegedly threatened texted their parents, who called 911 and that's what led to the lockdown.

"I just heard the intercom saying OK we're in lockdown, everybody do your lockdown procedure," a student who didn't want to be identified told us. "Multiple people were just like shaking, some crying because we didn't know what was going on.”

Kingwood senior Aurianna Chambers was in math class when it happened.

"The more time passed, the more I got anxious, and I said I need to text my parents," she said.

Monday morning, we saw long lines of cars wrapped around the school as anxious parents waited to pick up their children.

Mike Lopez told us he came to check on his two nieces, after learning about the possible threat through a family group text.

"I grabbed my bike because I knew I wouldn't be able to drive anywhere,” Lopez said.

He said his nieces were shaken up, but OK. He also shared the emotional toll situations like this take on parents and students.

"It's just good that everyone's safe,” Lopez said. "Even just now, seeing the parents getting their son or daughter out of school, hugging and embracing, I'm just like, it's very emotional, it's just very real at that point."

One student was detained, but it's not clear if that student has since been released or if charges will be filed.

The lockdown was lifted around 11:20 a.m.

Humble ISD said a video of a police officer with a weapon is being shared on social media, but the gun belonged to the officer.

The district sent out the following message to parents after the incident.

"Dear Kingwood High School Families,

I am writing to share factual information about today’s unusual situation. A parent called the school and 911 and reported that her child was being threatened with a weapon. As a result of the 911 call, Houston PD and US Customs responded.

Out of an abundance of caution, we placed our campus on lockdown so that authorities could conduct their investigation. The investigation discovered that two students engaged in a disagreement during a class. It was reported that one student told the other student they were going to kill them. The student who was threatened reported the statement to a parent.

The student who made the threat was located and detained. A search revealed no weapon on any person or on campus.

We are aware of a video posted to social media of a police officer carrying a weapon. That weapon belonged to the Houston Police Officer involved in the search. It was not a weapon that was confiscated on campus.

The lockdown was lifted at approximately 11:20 a.m. and the campus resumed normal operations.

I want to thank our Mustang Family for their cooperation during this incident. The proactive sharing of information is one of our most important safety strategies. Tips can be shared anytime with school staff, Humble ISD Police at 281-641-7900 or through the Humble ISD iHELP app."
