HOUSTON – A judge has ordered that Crestmont Village be shut down by Oct. 30 after a hearing was held Thursday morning.

The judge explained that the decision is partly to avoid having kids spend Halloween there. Receiver will stay on property until it shuts down to make sure boiler and sewage system still operate.

The judge also wants to meet again to follow up on Nov. 16.

KHOU 11 News first told you about Crestmont last month and gave viewers a glimpse inside of the conditions that families were dealing with firsthand.

Sewage leaking into apartments and rising up through drains was not an uncommon experience for residents.

They were also forced to go long periods of time without gas, power or hot water.

The city immediately moved in after that report, taking measures to get residents out. On Thursday the city said they have helped place approximately 40 families so far. There are 59 units still occupied.

The remaining tenants are packed up in preparation for Thursday's eviction deadline, crossing their fingers they will get approved for a new apartment in time.

"If one can tell me yes, I'm happy, yes! I've got to go. I can't, I've been without hot water for three weeks. I packed all my stuff. I had to go buy pots to take a nice warm bath," one resident said.

She says residents have been paying out of pocket for paint, and residents say they've also paid to fix broken appliances in their units, which they will not be reimbursed for.

The city is helping them with security deposits and first month's rent at their new homes.
