HPD: Woman, German shepherd injured after dog charges at officers

Police said one of an officer shot the dog after it charged at him for the second time.

HOUSTON — A woman and a dog were wounded Thursday morning after the German shepherd reportedly charged at Houston police officers.

Police were assisting FBI in serving a federal warrant on drug charges when they spotted the suspect in front of the home. The suspect’s German shepherd came charging at police, so the suspect was asked to put the animal away.

As the officers were taking the man into custody, the dog came back out from around the house and charged at officers. Police said one of the officers, a four-year veteran, fired several shots at the dog, hitting the dog.

Either shrapnel or fragments from the ground struck a 22-year-old woman in the arm. She was taken to a local hospital and has since been released.

The dog was seen from Air 11 overhead walking around with what appears to be a wound to one of its front legs.

"As is customary in officer-involved shooting within the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the HPD Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office," HPD said in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

This happened around 8 a.m. in the 7700 block of Greenstone, not far from I-45 and 610 South in southeast Houston.
