Houston street sign quickly fixed after "Madonna" typo

"Maconda" became "Madonna" because of a faded work order, according to City Council Member Sallie Alcorn.

HOUSTON — Houston City Councilwoman Sallie Alcorn was marked for Ash Wednesday while discussing Madonna.

Not the mother of Jesus or the Material Girl, but the name on a street sign in her neighborhood she shared this week on social media. She tagged Houston Public Works with the correct name, "Maconda."

"It cracked me up, it cracked up the whole neighborhood,” said Alcorn.

Alcorn said the sign was fixed within 24 hours.

"I’ve been told by Public Works there are several checks in place, and this is a really rare occurrence," said Alcorn.  "And this particular incident, there was a faded form a person was looking at and so it was just human error.”

KHOU 11 News has pointed out similar mistakes over the years along city streets and freeways from Rose Hill as two words instead of one word to Hempstead with “t” before the “s.”

How about "Beechunut" instead of Beechnut?

We even noticed a misspelled sign this week. "Rodgerdale" instead of Rogerdale along the Westpark Tollway.

It's something the Harris County Toll Road Authority said it will look into.

Meanwhile, Houston Public Works told us it manages more than a million traffic signs across the city overseen in a sign shop where mistakes occasionally make it onto one.

"Think about at all the green street signs you see all over town," said Alcorn.  "So, this one little mistake we can definitely forgive."  "And, like I said, it was a lot of fun.”

If you notice a misspelled sign in the city, report it to 311. Otherwise, it may be the responsibility of TxDOT or another agency.
