Firefighters install free smoke detectors for north Houston residents following fire that killed mom, her 1-year-old son

If you can't afford a fire alarm, you can contact the Houston Fire Department and they will come out to your home and install it for free.

HOUSTON — Firefighters were out in north Houston on Tuesday installing smoke detectors and providing safety information following a deadly blaze over the weekend.

That fatal fire happened at a home on Heaney Drive the morning of Saturday, Feb. 3.

Officials said 31-year-old mother Giovanna Cabrera was able to help her 9-year-old and 6-year-old escape the burning home. But sadly, she died alongside her 1-year-old son, Gabriel Pena, after running back inside to try to save him.

Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña spoke to residents in both English and Spanish, stressing the importance of families having an escape plan in the event of a house fire.

"Ensure people have information on how to draft a proper evacuation plan from their homes. We're gonna be installing a couple dozen smoke detectors in the neighborhood," he said.

Firefighters even offered advice about going into burning buildings.

"Once you are outside, our recommendation is for you to stay outside and inform firefighters once they arrive as far as if there is anyone inside the home," Peña said.

If you can't afford a fire alarm, you can contact the Houston Fire Department and they will come out to your home and install it for free.

HFD said the deadly fire is still under investigation although the family suspects it may have been electrical in nature.
