Heads up, Houston! If you're traveling for Thanksgiving, Bush and Hobby airports expect record crowds

The extended Thanksgiving holiday travel period for Houston Airports begins Thursday, Nov. 16, and ends Tuesday, Nov. 28.

HOUSTON — If you're hopping on a plane for Turkey Day, you need to plan ahead because Bush IAH and Hobby airports expect to set records for Thanksgiving travel with a combined 2.4 million passengers.

People who thought leaving town earlier than usual would beat the crowds might be in for a surprise at the airport. The cost of airline tickets often soar during Thanksgiving week, so a lot of travelers booked flights earlier this year to save money.

According to Houston Airports, the extended Thanksgiving holiday travel period begins Thursday, Nov. 16, and ends Tuesday, Nov. 28.

While the Wednesday before Thanksgiving was typically the busiest day in years past, this year it's expected to be Friday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 26 at Houston's airports.

  • On Friday, Nov. 17, more than 200,000 total travelers are expected.
  • On Sunday, Nov. 26, more than 212,000 travelers are expected.

The slowest days for air travel are expected to be Thanksgiving Day and Tuesday, Nov. 28.

 Thanksgiving travel tips

Here are a few tips that could help you get to the airport on time.

Traffic around the airports will be even busier than usual so keep that in mind.

Record crowds mean longer lines to check baggage and go through security.

Peak travel times are between 5 p.m. and  9 p.m. daily. Passengers with flights in that time period are advised to add at least an extra hour to their usual arrival time.

Passengers are advised to reserve parking online at least 12 hours before arrival. You can reserve parking at either Bush or Hobby at this website.

Bush IAH Airport

A new terminal is under construction at Bush so that will also affect travelers.

"I think at this point, it's pretty difficult to get in and out, as it would be when you deal with any construction project," Angela Strong from The Woodlands said.

The airport is also asking people to not circle around Bush Airport while waiting for your passenger. You’re encouraged to use these cell phone lots:

  • 17010 John F. Kennedy Boulevard
  • 5703 Will Clayton Parkway
  • 4500 Will Clayton Parkway
