H-E-B handing out free reusable bags for Earth Day

The bags, which are made out of recycled plastic bottles, will be handed out at Central Market, Joe V's Smart Shop and Mi Tienda locations.

AUSTIN, Texas — Monday, April 22, is Earth Day, and to celebrate, H-E-B is handing out 265,000 complimentary reusable bags.

The bags, which are made out of recycled plastic bottles, will be handed out at Central Market, Joe V's Smart Shop and Mi Tienda locations starting at 1 p.m. on Monday.

H-E-B said this year's celebration is aimed at significantly reducing the production of plastics by the year 2040. This year, 675 schools in Texas collected over 5 million plastic bags as part of H-E-B’s annual School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge.

The schools that collected the most plastic bags will receive H-E-B gift cards as prizes. Winners include Central Texas schools Emile Elementary, Cedar Creek Elementary and Colony Oaks Elementary.

Since 2008, H-E-B has handed out around 3 million reusable bags.
