HPD: 7-year-old hit by gunfire from passing vehicle

Houston police said a 7-year-old boy was standing on the sidewalk when he was shot once in the lower back.

HOUSTON — A child was transported to the hospital after being hit by gunfire from a passing vehicle in southwest Houston Sunday afternoon, according to Houston police.

Police said they were called to a shooting involving two vehicles just before 3 p.m. on Corporate Drive near the Westpark Tollway.

Police said a 7-year-old boy was standing on the sidewalk when he was shot once in the lower back.

The child was transported to the hospital. The child's family told HPD Chief Troy Finner he was undergoing surgery Sunday evening, according to a statement posted to X.

Police said the alleged shooter may be in a gold or gray four-door sedan that was seen going southbound on Corporate Drive. It is believed the suspect was shooting at a person, or persons, in a blue truck with ladders on top of it.

At this time, it is unknown if the shooting was a road rage incident or if the people in the two vehicles knew each other.

Bullet fragments were collected at the scene.

“One witness saw the vehicles coming over here on Langdon and saw the altercation between the two,” HPD Sgt. David Solis said. “We have some bullet fragments that we're going to collect, we're not sure if it's a road rage or any other incident.”

A woman spoke to KHOU 11 News and claimed she saw the shooting.

"The vehicle made a turn, then the other vehicle started shooting, it was six gunshots. He attempted to shoot at the vehicle’s window but the gunshots started going everywhere," she said in Spanish.

She said she'll never forget what she witnessed.

"Then the child that was near me started to cry. His mother looked at him and then realized he had been shot," she said.
