Headed to the beach this holiday weekend? Watch out for rip currents!

The NWS has issued a rip current risk statement for part of the Texas coastline. Do you know what to do if you get caught in one?

HOUSTON — The National Weather Service issued this rip current risk statement along the Southeast Texas coastline.

That's where we're expecting to have rip currents starting Wednesday, but lasting through the holiday weekend and into Tuesday. If you have plans to head down to Galveston or your favorite beach spot along the coast, rip currents are going to be a threat because of persistent southeasterly winds.

So what do you do if you ever get caught in a rip current?

First, don't fight the current. You'll want to swim parallel to the shore to get out of the current. If you can't escape it, float or tread water. And if you need help, call or wave for assistance.
