Free Thanksgiving meals, turkeys available in the Houston area

Bread of Life and YES Prep Public Schools are offering turkeys and all the trimmings to Houston families in need. Sen. Borris Miles is also providing free turkeys.

HOUSTON — A lot of Houston families are struggling right now and the holidays can be especially tough. 

There is help for people who can't afford a turkey dinner this year thanks to some kind-hearted Houstonians. 

Several groups are offering turkey giveaways or Thanksgiving meals with a turkey and all the trimmings.

Bread of Life

Bread of Life, Inc., a nonprofit committed to eradicating hunger in Houston, is giving away free turkeys and all the trimmings this Saturday, Nov. 18. 

They hope to double last year's giveaway of 1,000 turkey dinners. The drive-thru giveaway is open to anyone in need. 

Bread of Life is also asking for donations of these food items before the Christmas holidays.  

  • Canned goods: Green beans, sweet potatoes/yams, corn (creamed or whole), cranberry sauce, broth, pie filling
  • Boxed goods: Stuffing, mac and cheese, cake or muffin mix, icing, instant potatoes, cornbread
  • Bagged goods: Rice, beans
  • Miscellaneous: Gravy, oil spray cans

State Sen. Borris L. Miles 18th Annual Turkey Giveaway

Also on Saturday, Nov. 18, State Sen. Borris L. Miles is hosting his 18th Annual Turkey Giveaway with Texstars Foundation. 

This drive-thru event will take place at three locations.

The events are open to the public.

On Saturday, Nov. 18, State Sen. Borris L. Miles is hosting his 18th Annual Turkey Giveaway with Texstars Foundation.

Equality Health Foundation turkey giveaway

Equality Health Foundation is teaming up with Aldine Independent School District and Community Health Choice for its Healthy Fall Festival and 1,000 Turkey Giveaway on Saturday, November 18.

When: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 

Where: M.O. Campbell Center at 1865 Aldine Bender Road/FM 525

The Healthy Fall Festival is a community celebration and they'll give out frozen turkeys and fresh produce while supplies last. 

The event will also include free immunizations, vaccines and flu shots, health education sessions, mammograms and breast health screenings, diabetes testing, and other community resources and information. 

Equality Health Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to level the healthcare playing field in culturally diverse and underserved communities. The goal is to expand access to whole-person care, accelerate health education, and eliminate health inequalities so that everyone has an opportunity to lead healthier and longer lives.

YES Prep Public Schools

On Tuesday, Nov. 21, YES Prep Public Schools is providing free Thanksgiving turkeys and side dishes to hundreds of families in north Houston. 

When: 10 a.m. to noon

Where: Rockstar Energy Bike Park, 12257 Kuykendahl Rd.

Hundreds of families in need will get a free Thanksgiving turkey and meal kits that include macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn and green beans, while supplies last. 

The event hosted by YES Prep North Rankin Elementary is open to the public and no pre-registration is required.

Inayah For the Family turkey drive at Turkey Leg Hut

Houston singer and songwriter Inayah is hosting a the “For The Family” Turkey Drive in partnership with Turkey Leg Hut on Tuesday, Nov. 21

Inayah will be gifting 75 turkey legs and 75 gift cards to those in need from her community while supplies last.

When: 2 p.m.

Monkey's Tail 

On Thanksgiving Day, Monkey’s Tail is giving away 500 free individual meals, first come, first serve.  They will include fried dark and white turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, roasted Brussel sprouts, sweet potato hash, green bean casserole, a dinner roll, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce and a chocolate chip cookie.  

The meals will be served cold with reheating instructions.

When: Thursday, Nov. 23, 10 a.m. to noon
