HOUSTON -- Another change is coming to Comcast subscribers televisions throughout the Houston area, and if you re an unprepared customer, several of your channels could disappear.

The change will affect 700,000 Comcast subscribers as the cable provider is begins its digital upgrade and launches Xfinity TV.

Xfinity is more control, more choices, more HD programming, and faster Internet speeds. It s allowing our customers cutting edge digital technology, said Michael Bybee, Comcast Senior Manager, and Public Relations Houston Region.

The enhanced digital technology includes 42 new high definition channels, 28 new standard definition channels and more than 3,000 HD on demand Choices.

All this comes at no additional cost, but you will need to make sure you have the right equipment.

If you already have a digital set top box in your house then you re fine, you ll just automatically see all the upgrades, said Bybee. If you do have a television that s not hooked up to a digital set top box plugged straight into the wall, then you are going to have to go ahead and call and or e-mail.

If you don t have a box you will only be able to get broadcast stations on your television.

Comcast customers can order up to three digital pieces of equipment at no cost. Comcast will deliver them to your home. If you need additional boxes Comcast will charge you $1.99 a month.

(UPDATE:Comcast later clarified that customers can order up to three additional boxes, but not every customer will be eligible for three. Comcast said it depends on how many set top boxes the customer already has in his or her home.)

Comcast began the upgrades Tuesday in The Woodlands. Spring, Tomball, Humble and Atascocita are up next on the upgrade list.

Over 45 days out, you ll start hearing from Comcast about the update coming to your community and steps you can take, and again we are making this as simple as possible.

The upgrades should be complete in about a year.

Customers can call 1-877-634-4434 or visit Comcast.digitalnow.com to get their free digital equipment and learn more about the upgrade.
