Beltway 8-South mainlanes reopened after truck hauling boat crashes and catches fire

There was a large plume of black smoke rising from Beltway 8-South at 288 on Houston's south side Monday after a fiery crash involving a large truck.

HOUSTON — Beltway 8-South has reopened after eastbound mainlanes were closed for hours due to a vehicle fire Monday morning.

The eastbound lanes at Highway 288 were closed when a truck crashed and caught fire around 9 a.m. The boat it was hauling also caught fire.

The truck's driver apparently fell asleep, leading to the crash and fire, according to supervisors with the Harris County Toll Road Authority. A passing Nissan SUV was also damaged by the intense flames.

The toll road authority says there were no injuries, however.
