HOUSTON — Beltway 8-South has reopened after eastbound mainlanes were closed for hours due to a vehicle fire Monday morning.
The eastbound lanes at Highway 288 were closed when a truck crashed and caught fire around 9 a.m. The boat it was hauling also caught fire.
The truck's driver apparently fell asleep, leading to the crash and fire, according to supervisors with the Harris County Toll Road Authority. A passing Nissan SUV was also damaged by the intense flames.
The toll road authority says there were no injuries, however.
Both the big rig and the boat caught fire, leading to a big plume of black smoke.
Eastbound tollway lanes are still impacted as of noon at Highway 288. All traffic was being forced to the frontage road.
