HOUSTON - It's National Teen Driver Safety Week and KHOU 11 Reporter Melissa Correa took a deeper look at distracted driving in Houston.
Texas is one of only four states that does not have a cell phone-and-driving ban. However, nearly one in five traffic crashes in Texas is caused by a distracted driver.
KHOU 11 also found these alarming statistics and facts:
- In 2014, more than 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving crashes.
- More than 430,000 others were hurt - that's the equivalent of everyone living in The Woodlands, Pearland, Sugar Land, Galveston and Missouri City.
- At any given moment, 660,000 drivers are on cell phones, a statistic that has held steady since 2010.
- Almost 170 billion text messages are sent each month across the United States.
- Drivers in their 20's make up 38% of distracted drivers who were on their phone during a deadly crash
- Teen drivers make up 10% of drivers in deadly distracted driving wrecks
