Officials confirm one person has died from West Nile in Harris County

The death is the first West Nile virus related death in Harris County, according to Harris County Public Health (HCPH).

HOUSTON - Officials have confirmed the first death this year related to the West Nile virus in Harris County, Texas.

The patient was a man between the ages of 45-54 and was from Southwest Harris County. His identity will remain confidential, officials said.

The death is the first West Nile virus related death in Harris County and the second in the state of Texas for 2018, according to Harris County Public Health (HCPH).

The department said the patient had underlying chronic health conditions when he contracted the virus.

“We are devastated to report the first West Nile virus-associated death, and our hearts go out to the family. Mosquitoes can spread a variety of diseases and those who are most vulnerable; children, aging and immunosuppressed individuals, are at a higher risk of dying of mosquito-borne diseases,” stated Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH, executive director of HCPH.
