SUGAR LAND, Texas — On Friday, the Fort Bend ISD board announced Dr. Marc Smith was the lone finalist for the superintendent job, replacing Dr. Christie Whitbeck.

After the board meeting, which at times became heated, the district sent out a release with information about Smith.

Smith has more than 30 years of experience in education, starting as a classroom teacher. He comes to Fort Bend ISD from Duncanville ISD, where he was superintendent. Before that, he was superintendent of the Marshall ISD.

In 2020, Smith was recognized as Region 10 Superintendent of the Year in 2020.

He returns to Fort Bend ISD, where he spent more than six years of his career in leadership, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“The opportunity to return to Fort Bend ISD feels like a homecoming,” Smith said in a release. “I am honored to rejoin the district and community as your superintendent and look forward to reconnecting with the people and traditions that have always inspired me.”

Smith got his undergraduate degree from Texas Southern University, then got a masters in Administration and Supervision from Prairie View A&M and a doctorate from the University of Houston.

Smith is scheduled to sign his contract after a required 21-day waiting period. That is scheduled to happen on Jan. 8.
