More free preschools coming to the Houston area

One preschool will be on the north side of Houston. The other will be in the Third Ward.

HOUSTON — Preschool can be expensive. Because of that, New Hope Housing (NHH), an affordable housing and services provider, and Bezos Academy are teaming up to bring two tuition-free preschools to the Houston area.

According to NHH, the preschools will be located in community buildings in affordable housing developments.

The Bezos Academy Houston - Northside will be at NHH's Berry development, which is located at 8855 McGallion Road. The Bezos Academy Houston - Third Ward will be at NHH's Gray development, located at 2604 Gray Street.

These two new locations will build on NHH and the Bezos Academy's partnership in the Houston area, having already opened the Bezos Academy Houston - Southside location in NHH's Reed development in September 2023.

“Affordable housing and education are the keys to unlocking the potential of our communities,” said NHH President and CEO Joy Horak-Brown in a news release.

Horak-Brown said by 2026, all three locations will be operational.

"We can't wait to join Bezos Academy in nurturing a new generation of creative leaders and lifelong learners," Horak-Brown said.

Bezos Academy President Mike George said they intend to open a total of six tuition-free preschools in the area over the next several years.

"Opening Bezos Academy preschools in affordable housing communities is a game-changer for parents who are juggling the complexities of childcare and work," George said.

According to NHH, families who earn up to 400% of the federal poverty level are eligible for the schools. That comes to about $125,000 household income and under for a family of four.
