'These students are our future' | HISD principal speaks to KHOU 11 about the district after she said she was asked to resign

Dr. Jessica Berry told KHOU 11 that she could be fired.

HOUSTON — We’re hearing from an HISD principal who said she could be fired from her job at Herod Elementary School.

Dr. Jessica Berry posted on Facebook that she was asked to resign from her position. At least 12 other Herod employees reportedly received their termination letters in the past few weeks.

We spoke to Berry on Thursday, as more than a couple hundred people signed up for public comment at the district’s board meeting.

“This is happening across the district and these kids are our future and they don’t have a choice what is happening to them," she said. "So somebody has to address these students are our future and they can’t be left behind while adults play games."

Berry has been with Herod Elementary since 2022. She said at first she was concerned about making her story public.

“I might be ending my career in public education by speaking out,” Berry said.

The meeting started at 4 p.m. and 220 people signed up to talk, with each getting a minute, so that’s close to four hours of public comment. Many spoke against the recent cuts.
