What we know about the man accused of shooting into car, killing woman in NW Houston

Prosecutors said they plan on asking for no bond during an upcoming bail hearing.

HOUSTON — A judge has increased the bond for a man accused of shooting into a car and killing a woman who was on her way home from a bar in northwest Houston.

The bond for Wydell Jones went from $300,000 to $750,000 on Friday, but prosecutors said they plan to ask for no bond during a bail hearing early next week.

What happened

On Jan. 20, shortly after 2 a.m., Maria Ramirez, 59, was making her way home from a bar with a relative. She stopped at a red light on West Gulf Bank near N. Houston Rosslyn where Jones allegedly shot into her car.

Ramirez's vehicle rolled through an intersection, over a curb and into a parking lot, where it hit a dumpster.

She was pronounced dead on scene. Her passenger wasn't injured.

Jones told police he thought he was being followed. However, prosecutors said Ramirez and Jones were complete strangers.

"This was unprovoked as far as we know," prosecutor Rebecca Marshall said. "In this investigation, we didn't see any evidence to suggest this was a road rage incident or that the two of them knew each other."

During Jones' court appearance Friday, we learned he was found with methamphetamines and he has a lengthy criminal history in California. He's been living in Harris County for the last six years working as a truck driver.
