Montgomery County investigator seriously injured in hit-and-run crash while working race, constable's office says

The driver allegedly ignored traffic directions and hit the investigator before taking off, according to the constable's office.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — A Montgomery County Precinct 2 Constable's Office investigator was seriously injured Saturday afternoon when he was hit by a car while helping control traffic for an Ironman race in The Woodlands.

This happened around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Grogans Mill Road and South Millbend Drive.

The constable's office identified the victim as Toby McLaughlin, who's served with the agency for 40 years. Saturday night, the constable's office said McLaughlin was in serious but stable condition.

According to the constable's office, 50-year-old Daved Wargetz was driving west on Millbend when he came upon the intersection McLaughlin was working. Authorities said Wargetz ignored traffic directions and hit McLaughlin before taking off.

Wargetz's car was later found outside an apartment complex. The constable's office said he was taken into custody and charged with failure to stop and render aid causing serious bodily injury. Wargetz is being held on a $30,000 bond.
