Woman charged after claiming self-defense in shooting that left her husband in critical condition

Houston police said the woman tried to leave with her kids after shooting her husband during an argument Thursday night at their Galleria-area apartment.

HOUSTON — A 28-year-old woman was charged a day after shooting her husband several times at their Galleria-area apartment, according to police.

Houston Police Department investigators said it happened at an apartment complex on Yorktown Street between Westheimer and San Felipe around 7:30 p.m.

When officers got to the complex, they said they found the woman's 26-year-old husband shot multiple times. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

The woman was detained and officers determined that she and the man were in an argument that started to escalate. The woman said he followed her to a bedroom and continued arguing. She said she was in fear for her life so she shot him in self-defense.

Authorities said the couple's two children, believed to be between 1 and 3, were inside at the time but weren't harmed. Police said the woman took the kids and left the apartment. She was stopped in the parking lot and detained by responding officers.

Their children were placed in the care of a family member.

The woman was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Houston police.
