Triple shooting suspect shot, killed by officer in north Houston, police say

Police say a gunman who shot three people was shot and killed by an officer.

HOUSTON — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in north Houston.

This happened at West 44th and Yale streets in the Independence Heights area Friday afternoon.

Police say a gunman who shot three people was shot and killed by an officer. It had previously been reported that he shot four people, but early information was clarified by HPD Chief Art Acevedo Friday night.

Acevedo said it started in the 200 block of West 44th at about 4:32 p.m. That's when police received a call about shots fired in the area.

A 32-year-old man was dropped off at his sister's house by a friend. But when he got out of the vehicle, without a provocation, he shot the friend who brought him to his sister's house, Acevedo said.

The driver, a 23-year-old man, was in surgery at Ben Taub hospital as of Friday night, according to Acevedo.

Within moments, another friend pulled up in a different vehicle and the suspect shot him immediately - multiple times in the legs, Acevedo said. That person was taken to St. Joseph's hospital.

Officers who responded applied tourniquets to the second person who'd been shot, Acevedo said.

At some point, the suspect shot his own brother, who was also taken to St. Joseph's. He also fought with his sister over the gun, but she was unable to gain control of the weapon, Acevedo said.

An officer told the suspect to drop the weapon, but he refused and threatened the officer, according to Acevedo. The officer, identified Friday night by the department as first-year officer Joshua Sheen, fatally shot the suspect.
