Son charged after mom found shot to death inside north Harris County home, sheriff says

Christopher Melendez, 27, is charged with murder after his mom, Anna Iris Melendez, 52, was found shot to death inside her home.

HOUSTON — A man has been charged after his mom was found shot to death inside her home in north Harris County Sunday morning, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

It happened at a home on Verde Trails Drive near Imperial Valley Drive.

Deputies entered the home and found a woman, now identified as 52-year-old Anna Iris Melendez, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Gonzalez said on Saturday around 10 p.m., deputies responded to an in-progress call. He said it sounded like someone was "in distress" and that they heard possible gunshots over the phone.

Deputies went to the general area but didn't find anything suspicious. They spoke to neighbors who did not hear or see anything, so they left the scene.

About an hour later, an alarm call dropped at the same location. One of the same deputies who responded to the previous call went to the scene and noticed the garage door of the home was now open.

Gonzalez said deputies searched around the property but found no signs of forced entry. Still, they remained on the scene while an investigation was underway.

On Sunday night, Gonzalez announced that Melendez's son, 27-year-old Christopher Melendez, was charged in connection with her death.

The sheriff said Christopher Melendez was arrested Sunday morning after fleeing Houston police officers on a traffic-related offense.

He is booked in the Harris County Jail and charged with murder.

Court records show current charges for Christopher Melendez are driving while intoxicated, unlawful carrying of a weapon and evading arrest.
