ARLINGTON, Texas — This story has been thoroughly updated.
Arlington police are investigating a shooting scene after three people were found dead inside an apartment and a fourth person was found injured in the parking lot, in what police are now calling a double murder-suicide, officials said.
Officers said they responded to a call about a "violent situation" around 5 a.m. Wednesday in the 2300 block of Windsprint Way. A man called police after he noticed that a car parked near his vehicle had glass damage to the passenger window, officials said.
Authorities said as the man looked into the vehicle, he saw an unconscious woman who had been shot. She was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries and underwent surgery, police said. Her name has still not been released.
This prompted Arlington police officers to check the license plate of the vehicle where the woman was found shot, which led them to an address to a nearby apartment in the same complex, officials said.
As police officers approached the apartment unit, they noticed the front door was partially opened and said it appeared as if someone had forced their way in. This is when officers entered the unit to check inside and found a man, woman, and the woman's teenage son dead, authorities said.
Police at the scene told WFAA that it appeared that the man, later identified as the suspect, 36-year-old Christopher Baker of Fort Worth, went into the apartment and killed the woman and her son. Police said Ring video also showed the suspect kick the door and immediately start shooting.
Those shots killed Chasity Williams, 43, and her son, 15-year-old Damajay Joseph, who lived in the apartment, according to family members. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified them later Wednesday afternoon. Police said the teen killed, Damajay Joseph, was a 15-year-old student at Mansfield High School.
Family members confirmed Baker and Williams had a romantic relationship at some point, but they don't know the motive for either of the shootings. Police also described the woman found in the car as an "acquaintance" of Baker.
Cook said investigators believe Baker, 36, shot that woman in the head before leaving the car and breaking into Williams' apartment. While Baker's residence is not listed as the apartment where Williams and her son lived, the vehicle was registered to that address.
Cook said police believe they both had "ties" to that apartment.
Authorities said they found two guns inside the apartment near Baker and Williams. Arlington Deputy Police Chief Chris Cook said the shooting happened so fast it's unlikely Williams or Joseph had an opportunity to defend themselves.
A young woman who confirmed she is Williams' daughter and Joseph's sister shared photos of both victims but was not available for an interview.
Mansfield High School released this statement Wednesday evening:
"It is with deep sorrow that I share with you that one of our students, Damajay Williams, passed away. Damajay was a sophomore here at Mansfield High School, and we will miss him dearly.
"We were alerted of the news today, and it is one that we are handling with extreme delicacy.
"There will be extra counselors on campus to help our students and staff as they go through the grieving process. A virtual processing group will be held tomorrow, May 27 at 9 a.m. There will also be in-person counseling support tomorrow, May 27 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Another in-person support session is scheduled for Friday, May 28 at 9 a.m.
"Counselors will remain on campus to provide support as needed.
"We understand that each student deals with this type of news differently, so we ask that parents please take time to help us acknowledge and monitor your child’s feelings
"As we continue to respect the Williams family’s privacy, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."
Arlington police said they had responded to the apartment twice in April for reports of domestic disturbances. They are still processing the scene to determine who discharged the guns in Wednesday's shooting.
Investigators said they didn't receive any calls about residents hearing gunshots overnight, however, they haven't ruled out the possibility that the shooting may have occurred earlier than when the man called after finding the woman shot in the car.
Arlington police said they will release more information about those involved in Wednesday's incident at a later time.
