CONROE, Texas -- A man who worked for the Montgomery County library system has been arrested for possessing child pornography.
Timothy Alcala was arrested on August 22 after authorities found hundreds of images on his computer in his Conroe home.
Officials said his illegal activity dates back to 2010 and that federal authorities alerted them to the situation a few months ago.
Warren Diepraam with the Montgomery County District Attorney's office said they've been watching him ever since.
"There are possibly hundreds of victims out there," said Diepraam. "We found large number of them in Texas, but also in Pennsylvania and in Australia."
Authorities said Alcala would lure his victims – some as young as 9 years old – on Facebook, and would use aliases including the names Steven Wilson, Scott Williams, Vince Evans, Beth Dahl, Amber Dahl and Nick Wallace.
Diepraam said Alcala would threaten the victims with death or suicide to get victims to send nude photos of themselves.
Even though there are age restrictions for websites like Facebook, he said parents should be more vigilant about their child's online activity.
"You have to make sure you limit your access and keep those privacy settings very high," said Diepraam.
A library official told KHOU 11 News that Alcala was an employee for seven years. He acted as a courier, delivering books between branches.
She also said Alcala didn't have access to county computers, nor did he have a change to interact with children at the libraries, so it's believed his activities were done outside of work.
Alcala has been charged with 10 counts of promotion and possession of child porn. He is being held at the Montgomery County Jail on a $1 million bond.
