Who is Kaysone Sky Blossom, the woman accused of stabbing a young mother to death near the Galleria?

Kaysone Sky Blossom is accused of stabbing Kayla Stevenson to death last weekend and stealing her purse as the young mother was walking to work near the Galleria.

HOUSTON — Kaysone Sky Blossom, 37, is accused of killing 17-year-old Kayla Stevenson last weekend. Investigators said Stevenson was on her way to work at the Galleria when Blossom stabbed her and stole her purse.

Blossom is charged with capital murder and was expected to appear in court on Thursday morning, but her appearance was delayed due to a medical issue.

Prosecutors said Blossom was out on bond when she killed Stevenson. In 2021, she was charged with aggravated assault of a family member after authorities said she stabbed her 58-year-old ex-boyfriend.

Now, Blossom is charged in connection with the death of Stevenson. Investigators said Blossom stole Stevenson's purse around 11 a.m. and left the scene along West Alabama on a blue bicycle that was found abandoned nearby.

According to court documents, police were able to identify Blossom as a suspect partly because of community tips. She was arrested at her home along Beechnut Street on Wednesday and was booked into the Harris County Jail, the Houston Police Department said. HPD identified Blossom as the suspect and also released her mugshot on Wednesday night.

Prosecutors were expected to ask for Blossom to be held without bond. According to court documents, Blossom could have a mental illness.

She was expected to appear before a judge on Thursday evening, but instead, was rescheduled to appear on Friday morning.

Victim had a baby daughter

Kayla would have turned 18 in February and was the mother of a 6-month-old daughter.

"She was a fun loving, free spirit, ya know. She was goofy, she always made me laugh, she was really happy," mother Kylie Stevenson said.

She couldn't believe that her daughter was killed over a purse.

"It was the stupidest thing ever. Not only did they kill her to take her purse, they took her phone they tried to use her bank card," Kylie told us. "You continued to violate her after she had died."

Kylie said Kayla's fiancé had just given her the Juicy Couture purse and it came with a smaller version that was a gift for the couple's baby daughter, Kalani.

Family members said Kayla worked at Lids and the NBA Store at the Galleria to earn spending money and buy a car.

Stevenson's family set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses.
