HPD: Driver seriously injured when man he asked to get out of his car shoots him in Third Ward

According to the Houston Police Department, the driver was dropping off another person when an unknown man got into his car and started smoking a cigarette.

HOUSTON — A man was seriously injured after a person he had asked to get out of his car shot him in Third Ward, Houston police say.

This happened at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday on Scott and Elgin, close to the Gulf Freeway.

According to the Houston Police Department, the driver was dropping off another person when an unknown man got into his car and started smoking a cigarette. The victim asked the man to get out of the car, which he did. Police said the man came back to the car with a gun and opened fire, hitting the driver three times.

The passenger was uninjured and was able to give police a description. Officers found the man in the area and took him into custody without incident, according to HPD.

The driver was taken to a hospital in what police called serious condition.
