According to court documents, Loretta Norwood, 23, is charged with abandoning a child.

HOUSTON — Police have identified a woman accused of abandoning her 9-month-old baby on a doorstep in southeast Houston.

The court records detail how the baby was found and how police were able to put the pieces together to find his mother.

Detectives said that that baby was sitting in a car seat outside alone for nearly six hours before anyone found him.

According to court documents, Norwood left the baby on a doorstep last Thursday around midnight, strapped into a car seat with a backpack of belongings.

Thirty-eight minutes later, charging documents state she sent a text message to a man saying “Your son outside, tell your mom to get him. Don’t leave your son outside. He is there after the DNA, you can get his papers.”

According to court document, the man didn’t know the baby was his and he didn’t see the text until 8 a.m. the next day. By that point, the woman who lives at the home had already discovered the baby on the porch and called 911.

Since then, police said several people who know Norwood have confirmed the baby is hers.

According to court records, she had just been released on bond two weeks before all this on a robbery charge in Fort Bend County.
