WALLER COUNTY, Texas — Two armed suspects were flown to the hospital on Tuesday after they were shot by officers in Waller County, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD said officers had spent the day looking for one of the suspects who was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, theft and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
Information led the officers to Waller County where they spotted the suspect in the passenger seat of a parked car. He was in a white Dodge Charger with another man and a woman, police said.
The officers thought they could safely get the suspect into custody by blocking the Dodge Charger with their vehicles -- a marked patrol vehicle and two unmarked vehicles. When the suspect spotted the officers, he and the other man, ages 19 and 20, inside his vehicle got out and started shooting at the officers, HPD said.
The officers' vehicles were hit. They shot back, hitting the suspect and the other man who HPD said had a semi-automatic pistol that was modified to shoot like a fully automatic.
When the two fell to the ground, officers rendered aid until Life Flight responded to take them both to the Texas Medical Center. As of Wednesday morning, one man remained in critical condition and the other was stable.
No officers were injured in this shooting. Neither was the woman in the suspect's vehicle.
HPD said one officer who fired their weapon has been with the department for five years. Another officer who fired their weapon has been with the department for three years. Both will be put on administrative leave per the department's policy.
The investigation into the shooting will be led by the Texas Rangers since it was outside HPD's jurisdiction.
