Deputy shoots man accused of breaking into cars at apartment complex off Highway 6 near 290, sheriff says

The deputy has served with the sheriff's office for two years and had previously served with other agencies. He was not injured.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A Harris County deputy shot a man accused of breaking into cars early Saturday morning, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

This happened off Highway 6 near US 290 at around 2 a.m.

Gonzalez said deputies were responding to multiple calls about a man who may have been breaking into cars on the property. When deputies arrived, one of them found a man going through a car with a bag, according to the sheriff.

When the deputy approached the man and identified himself, he saw that the man had what he believed to be a pistol. The deputy reportedly gave multiple commands for the man to not reach for the gun. The man then tried to get into another car while the deputy continued to try and give commands.

That's when Gonzalez said the deputy opened fire multiple times, hitting the man.

The man was taken to an area hospital where the sheriff said he was in serious condition but is expected to survive.

The deputy has served with the sheriff's office for two years and had previously served with other agencies. He was not injured.
