'You know what you were doing' | Mom of man shot to death at north Houston stop sign shares message to his killer

Ricardo Vega, 27, was alone in a Toyota sedan when he stopped at the stop sign, Houston police said. They believe the shots came from a tan or beige Chevy pickup.

HOUSTON — A Houston mom laid her son to rest Saturday after he was shot and killed at a northside stop sign.

Houston police say the shooting happened on West Canino Road near I-45 on Monday, April 15 around 9:52 p.m.

Family members identified the victim as Ricardo Vega, 27. Vega is the father of an 8-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy. On Saturday, funeral services were held for Vega at the Guardian Angel Funeral Home in north Houston.

"His smile could light up a room. That’s what’s giving momma strength right now besides my father God," Victoria Garcia, Vega’s mother, told KHOU 11.

Family and friends gathered to share memories of Vega.

"Ricardo loved to cook, he loved to grill, he loved to fish, that was his quiet time and that was time with his son as well," Garcia said.

Vega was alone in a Toyota sedan when he stopped at the stop sign, Houston police said. They believe the shots came from a tan or beige Chevy pickup.

His car rolled into the service road. Police said the dash camera captured the incident, but the suspect is still on the run.

"I know that I got to be patient because it is frustrating. Garcia said. "As a mom I want to know. I want to know what transpired that night. I want to know because this is out of character for Ricardo."

Garcia said she'll continue to fight for her son, but hopes the person responsible will come forward.

"I am blessed God gave me 27 years with him," she said. "I’m blessed with those beautiful memories. My son did not deserve what you did because you knew what you were doing."

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Houston Police or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
