HOUSTON — The brother of a fallen Houston Police officer has been charged with making death threats against a judge in Harris County.

Eric Cantu, 56, has been charged with making a terroristic threat. He is the brother of HPD officer Frank Cantu who was killed by a drunk driver in 2004.

Eric Cantu is accused of calling the daughter of Harris County civil district court judge Donna Roth and threatening to kill Roth.

According to court documents, Roth's daughter told deputies she began receiving calls that appeared as "No Caller ID" on February 8, 2019. The calls were to her cell phone and her work phone.

She said the caller left voicemail messages threatening to find and kill her mother.

The messages also included the caller saying Roth ripped of his family and "ripped off the family of a dead Houston Police officer."

Roth told deputies she knew the caller was Eric Cantu.

She also said some of the things he referenced in the threatening messages were things only he could have known.

Roth had represented the Cantu family as a plaintiff’s attorney before becoming a judge and had met with Cantu on multiple occasions.
