How a Lyft ride and an ex-coach led police to charge former Houston-area high school football player with murder

Houston police say Periche Barley, 18, pulled a gun on them when they tried to arrest him so an officer fired 2 shots at him. He wasn't hit and they arrested him.

HOUSTON — We've learned more details about why Houston police arrested a man after firing shots at him Monday in northwest Houston.

When officers were serving a warrant on Periche Barley, 18, at an apartment complex on Antoine Drive, he pulled a gun on them, according to HPD.

Assistant Chief Y. Bashir said Barley ignored commands to drop his weapon so an officer fired two shots but missed him.

No one was hurt and Barley was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in a February shooting.

Bashir said investigators recovered a handgun with an extended magazine at the scene but they don't know yet if it's the same weapon used in the murder case.

Rankin Road shooting

According to court documents obtained by KHOU 11, Barley's charges stem from a February 21 gas station shooting on West Rankin Road near Ella Blvd. in north Houston.

HPD homicide detectives said Barley shot and killed 17-year-old Ruben Daniel Estrada and fired several shots at four juveniles inside the victim's pickup.

The juveniles told investigators that they were buying marijuana from Barley at the gas station but got into an argument over the quality and Estrada tried to drive away. Surveillance video shows a man in a hoodie chasing Estrada's truck and firing several shots.

Estrada crashed into another vehicle nearby. He was rushed to a hospital but died from a gunshot wound to his head.

Homicide detectives said surveillance video showed the gunman being dropped off at the gas station by a Lyft driver who later told them he picked him up at a nearby fast food restaurant. Detectives found surveillance from the restaurant that showed the same man in the hoodie.

Police said a warrant for the Lyft records led them to Barley. A witness from the gas station confirmed that he'd seen Barley there several times on the day of the shooting.

According to court documents, detectives also confirmed Barley's identity with his former football coach at Dekaney High School. The coach told them Barley left the school at some point but he didn't know why.
