Court docs: Man thought woman was following him when he shot into her SUV, killing her

Dominique Menefee, 30, is charged with murder in connection with the death of Sherniqua Danielle Banks on Sept. 7.

HOUSTON — Court documents revealed more details about a deadly shooting in the early morning hours on Sept. 7. Also, a $5,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of the man investigators believe pulled the trigger.

Sherniqua Danielle Banks was 34 when she was shot and killed in front of her young son while they were driving in the Acres Homes area.

Houston police said Banks was driving along West Gulf Bank Road near West Montgomery Road around 2:45 a.m. when Dominique Menefee opened fire on her SUV. Court documents revealed more insight into the reason behind the shooting.

There were two passengers in Menefee's car at the time of the shooting, according to court documents. Both were detained and questioned shortly after the shooting.

One of them told investigators that Menefee thought someone was following them after they pulled into a gas station where they were going to play game machines so they left.

While they were driving, the witness said Menefee identified Banks' SUV as the vehicle that he believed was following him. The witness said he pulled alongside the SUV and fired multiple shots into the vehicle.

Banks' SUV was found by police officers stopped on a sidewalk along West Gulf Bank. Banks was pronounced dead at the scene with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. A man in the SUV was shot in the left arm and pelvic area. He was taken to an area hospital for surgery. Banks' 3-year-old son was also in the SUV but wasn't injured.

The witness in Menefee's car told investigators they kept driving even though they got a flat tire. About five minutes later, she said Menefee stopped the car in a turn lane on West Mount Houston Road, took the keys and ran away from the scene.

The other passenger in Menefee's car was also detained and questioned. He told investigators that he was asleep in the back seat when he heard the tire blow. He said Menefee kept driving and then took off running when the car came to a stop.

After nearly two months of being considered a person of interest, Menefee was charged with murder on Oct. 25.
