Commemoration at Battleship Texas among Houston D-Day 75th Anniversary events

The world is honoring those who fought and died in Normandy on the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Here are some of the events taking place today across Houston:

D-Day 75th Anniversary Commemoration at Battleship Texas

The ceremony on the ship's bow is free and open to the public. Boarding will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Special guests include:

  • Former TEXAS crew members and their families
  • Samuel J. Cox, USN, RADM (Retired), Director, Navy History and Heritage Command
  • Charles Hewell, P.E., CAPT USN (Retired)
  • Wayne Thompson, CWO4, USCG (Retired)
  • Community Band of Southeast Texas
  • Sea Cadets Color Guard
  • The Patriot Guard Riders
  • Cub Scout Pack 1292, Sam Houston Council, recognizing D-Day Medal of Honor recipients.

The ceremony will be preceded by a flyover from the Houston Wing: Commemorative Air Force. Following the ceremony, AirSports Skydiving Team will perform a patriotic flag jump.

Refreshments provided by the Battleship TEXAS Foundation will be served immediately following the ceremony in the Port Air Castle.

9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Activities Aboard the Sh

11:00 a.m. - Special Presentation: The Story of Two USS TEXAS Ships

A Talk by Captain Kai Torkelson, Commander, Norfolk Navy Shipyard

June 6 and 8 - Hangar Talks 11 and 1:

Special pop-up talks on the role of LSFM aircraft in D-Day.

June 8 - B-17 Tours 1-3pm: 

The museum invites you to tour the inside of our B-17 and get up close with one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II. 

June 8 - Curator’s Corner- 11:30am

                Join curator Stewart Bailey for a discussion on the role of airpower in the success of D-day.

Lone Star Flight Museum – Warbird Ride Program

The museum offers flight experiences in the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, North American B-25 Mitchell, North American T-6 Texan, Boeing PT-17 Stearman, Fairchild PT-19 Cornell and the Cessna T-41 Mescalero.  Pricing begins at $250 per person.  Flights are typically 35-40 minutes, 20-25 minutes in the air. Passengers must be 18 or older for the T-6, Stearman and PT-19. Passengers who are 12-17 years old can fly in the B-17, B-25 and T-41 if accompanied by a parent, no exceptions. All flights are weather permitting.
