HEMPSTEAD, Texas — Texas grocery giant H-E-B has purchased 500 acres of land in Hempstead with plans to develop a new distribution campus, the company announced on Thursday.

The land will be developed over the course of multiple phases, with construction on the first phase expected to start in late 2024. The tract of land is located in Waller County south of Highway 290 and east of Highway 6. H-E-B did not disclose the details of the deal.

"The land purchase is the first step in development of this strategically planned campus, a project that will position H-E-B to better serve our customers well into the future," Chief Supply Chain Officer Carson Landsgard said.

Hempstead Mayor Erica Gillum said the city looks forward to the partnership with H-E-B.

"As our city expands its offerings and economic opportunities, we are pleased to welcome H-E-B to Hempstead where we maintain our small-town status and allow progress to take root," Gillum said.

Hempstead is located around 50 miles northwest of Houston.

H-E-B said it will release more details about the development as the project progresses.
