Gulf Freeway reopens in La Marque area following chase and deadly crash, Galveston police say

A chase started after a woman fell off a motorcycle on the Seawall and the driver sped off leaving her behind, Galveston police said.

The Gulf Freeway is shut down heading north in Galveston County following a deadly chase with a motorcycle early this morning.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — The Gulf Freeway has reopened heading north in Galveston County following a deadly chase with a motorcycle early this morning, according to Galveston police.

According to Houston TranStar, the closure started just before 1:30 a.m. near FM 519/Main. The freeway reopened just after 7 a.m.

The Galveston Police Department said officers responded to a call of an auto-pedestrian crash at 41st and Seawall at 12:30 a.m. Investigators said a woman fell off a motorcycle and the male driver sped away from the scene. The woman survived but was critically injured.

Police said they started to chase the motorcycle rider who was speeding on the Gulf Freeway heading north. However, the 30-year-old rider eventually crashed into a flatbed truck and then hit a Toyota Tundra.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. 

The man in the Tundra was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
