Memorial Park completes part of $200,000,000 makeover

It's a jewel in the middle of a sprawling city. But enjoyed by people far and wide.

HOUSTON — One of Houston's favorite parks is showing off the latest phase in its massive $200 million makeover.

“I love it, I absolutely love it,” said Memorial Park visitor Angela Moffatt.

A seasonable October day, by Houston standards, brought Moffatt and many others out to Memorial Park Thursday. And, specifically, a new section that includes a running trail extension.

Memorial Park is undergoing a $200,000,000 renovation.

“I just took a picture of the new rest area and I can’t wait to see what comes,” said Moffatt.

For the first time, the Seymour Lieberman Exer-trail is exactly three miles long.

There are also new restrooms inspired by Army tents used at Camp Logan, which preceded the park.

There is dark-sky lighting meant to prevent night-time light pollution. Native landscaping and infrastructure helps retain water and control flooding.

One-hundred-and-fifty new paid parking spaces will help fund upkeep. All of it is part of the first piece of the first phase of Memorial Park’s $200 million master plan.

“This first phase took about two years and the rest will take about two years to deliver,” said Memorial Park Conservancy CEO Shellye Arnold. “And then we have another nine years of projects as part of the 10-year master plan.”

It’s paid for through public and private funding. There are renderings that show how Memorial Park will eventually look. It’s a jewel in the middle of a sprawling city. But enjoyed by people far and wide.

“And our research found people from 170 regional zip codes,” said Arnold. “It’s really the region’s park, not just Houston, but the entire region’s park.”

Moffatt plans to make it a part of her life forever. If only we could have kept up with her on her walk.

“Everybody needs to come be a part of it,” said Moffatt.

Memorial Park officials admit the paid parking component is the most controversial addition. But they said it’s only a dollar for three hours and will help encourage turnover. Additionally, 75% of the park’s parking will still be free after the renovations.
