BAYTOWN, Texas — The Lynchburg Ferry is closed after high tides have flooded part of the roadway to the ferry, according to Harris County Precinct 2.
Deputies posted a photo to Twitter Tuesday morning showing water flooding the roadway.
One resident told KHOU 11 the tide is about a foot and a half higher than it normally is.
“What happens is when you get the southeast winds from the Bay, you can think of it as a bathtub, the Bay is pretty shallow.” Steve Mewborn said.
Many folks are relying on the ferry to operate tomorrow.
The ferry is free, and a busy one, crossing the Houston Ship Channel and carrying up to 2,000 vehicles a day.
It’s also the oldest operating ferry service in Texas.
Wednesday's weather should make winds a bit tamer but high tides are expected to stick around until Thursday.
It's unclear when the ferry will reopen.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
