Third Ward residents ready to tackle trash problem

Neighbors are sick of seeing trash everywhere in Third Ward. "No matter if you're a homeowner, or a renter, or a visitor to the neighborhood, nobody wants to see trash laying around," said Edward Pettitt.

HOUSTON – Neighbors are sick of seeing trash everywhere in Third Ward.

“No matter if you’re a homeowner, or a renter, or a visitor to the neighborhood, nobody wants to see trash laying around,” said Edward Pettitt.

“Children have to pass through here and walk through here and go through this trash when they go home. That’s not fair for them,” said Deloyd Parker, SHAPE Community Center.

Community leaders have decided to do something about it. They’ve organized a cleanup day on Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The plan is to divide up in teams and pick up as much garbage as possible.

Organizers hope to send a message to people who dump illegally in Third Ward.

“Enough is enough. We’re tired of having to live in these conditions,” said Debbie White. “We are serious about keeping Third Ward clean. We will no longer accept illegal dumping in our community.”

Meetup points for the cleanup event will be at Trinity East UMC at 2418 McGowen and SHAPE Community Center at 3815 Live Oak.

Supplies will be limited. Volunteers are asked to bring items like rakes, gloves, grabbers, trash bags, face masks and safety glasses.
