A deputy shot several times last November is a walking miracle today.
Precinct 4 Deputy Justin Gay is on his feet and walking just four months after being shot seven times in his legs.
Gay was responding to a disturbance call on Nov. 5, 2017 when a gunman shot him at point-blank range with a 45-calibur pistol.
But seven bullets weren't enough to stop this determined deputy. The thought of never seeing his children again helped keep him alive as he lay bleeding on the ground.
“I was thinking how unfortunate it would be for my parents to have to bury their only son,” Gay told us back in December. “I was thinking how unfortunate it would be for my wife to be a widow at such a young age. Most importantly, I was thinking about my children.”
The deputy says he has no hatred for suspect Constantine Argyriou. He was captured shortly after the shooting and charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer.
“My judgment doesn’t matter,” said Gay. “It’s God’s that matters.”
Damage to Gay's legs was extensive and he’s undergone multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation.
Deputy Gay faces a long road to recovery with more rehab ahead.
He had to give up his extra job after he was shot, so the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office is helping to raise funds for medical bills and other expenses.
