How to cope with PTSD from previous floods

If you are struggling with high anxiety today, there are steps you can take to help cope with those emotions.

You may be stressed or nervous when you look outside and see dark skies and flooded streets. That’s normal!

However, there are signs that may mean you’re struggling with something more serious.

People whose homes or cars flooded during Hurricane Harvey or other major weather events may be suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder.

KHOU Health and Wellness Expert Bill Prasad, who is also a licensed professional counselor, shared tips to get through today’s rainy day.

Common signs of PTSD:

  • Flashbacks or nightmares
  • Central nervous system on guard: heart beating faster, sweating, brain fog
  • Avoidance
  • Negative emotions like being irritable or angry

If you are struggling with high anxiety, there are steps you can take to help cope with those emotions.

What can you do?

  • Ask yourself, “what am I doing to keep myself safe?” Thinking about the steps you’ve taken -  like getting batteries and flashlights ready – can reduce feelings of helplessness.
  • Talk to someone about your feelings
  • Distract yourself with other activities

Children who have witnessed flooding in the past are at risk of PTSD as well. Experts recommend parents talk openly with their kids about those feelings.
