Sweet success brings Hurts Donuts to Katy

The Katy location will mark the 16th store for Hurts and the second in Texas.

KATY, Texas- A donut shop with a cult following is about to open inside a shopping center along Spring Green Boulevard at the Westpark Tollway.

Hurts Donuts has hired about 80 employees and still needs at least 20 more.

The company was started by Kas and Tim Clegg about four years ago in Springfield, Missouri. Tim lost his job during the 2008 recession and after learning how to make donuts with the help of a YouTube video decided to open the first Hurts Donuts.

“You say, hey you want a Hurts Donut,” explained Kas Clegg as she started the joke the shop is named after “And they say yeah. And you punch them in the arm and you say, hurts, donut?”

The Katy location will mark the 16th store for Hurts and the second in Texas. Frisco, Clegg says, is a high-performing location.

“Our donuts are twice as big as normal donuts, they’re all made my hand and decorated by hand,” said Clegg. “And we make them fresh 24 hours a day.”

Hurts Donuts does its part to ease the pain. Tim Clegg is living with muscular sclerosis. A portion of sales goes to the MS Society. Employees are known for handing out donuts to people on the street in exchange for a hug. And locations collect donated items, in case someone needs more than an afternoon snack. Hurts also sold t-shirts to raise money for families impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Hurts Donuts will open Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 5 a.m. and will stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, holidays included.
