Hurricane Isaias strengthens in the Caribbean

Hurricane force winds should remain offshore but something Floridians and people in the Carolinas will need to watch.

HOUSTON — Tropical Storm Isaias became Hurricane Isaias on Friday evening.

Hurricane Isaias' path is taking it by Haiti, then the Dominican Republic. It could pose a threat to Florida by the weekend.

It is not expected to be a threat to the Gulf Coast or Texas.

As of Friday morning, the storm has sustained max winds of 80 miles per hour.

KHOU 11 Meteorologist Blake Mathews says Isaias is expected to be a category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph as it approaches Florida.

"Hurricane force winds should remain offshore but something Floridians and people in the Carolinas will need to watch," says Mathews.
