Houston airports expecting record number of spring break travelers

Airport officials say 2.3 million travelers are projected to take to the skies in what they're saying will be similar to Thanksgiving holiday travel.

HOUSTON — Houston’s Airport System is expecting record-breaking travel for spring break.

Airport officials say 2.3 million travelers are projected to take to the skies in what they're saying will be similar to Thanksgiving holiday travel.

“This is looking to be our busiest spring break ever,” said Houston Airport System Chief Operating Officer, Jim Szczesniak.

Szczesniak said they’ve made some changes at George Bush Intercontinental Airport to accommodate the crowds.

“We have a couple construction projects out here that are impacting the roadways, so what we've done during spring break, we're basically ceasing construction activity and maintaining the lanes to the full capacity that we can," Szczesniak said.

He said they’ve also added additional staff to help direct traffic and have added another cell phone lot for people waiting to drop off or pick up loved ones.

The TSA is also sending reminders ahead of the busy weekend.

Patricia Mancha, a media spokesperson for TSA Texas, said one of the issues they’re continuing to see is the number of people who have firearms in their carry-on luggage.

"In the country, George Bush was number three as far as people who were bringing guns in their carry on," Mancha said. "This year, already we have 41 guns that have been found in travelers carry-on luggage."

She said they’re urging travelers to check their bags before going through TSA, and if you’re traveling with a firearm to have it properly checked in and secured.

"Please, start at zero. Empty out your luggage, make sure you know what’s in your luggage at all times,” she said.
