HOUSTON -- Houston police confirm a driver died when an 18-wheeler, a car and a pickup truck collided on Almeda early Thursday.

The crash happened just south of Reed Road in southwest Houston.

As of 9:45 a.m. all lanes of Almeda remained blocked in both directions, and police said the roadway could remain closed until at least 10 or 11 a.m.

Police tell KHOU 11 the driver of a Volvo sedan went into the opposite lane of traffic and slammed into the big rig. The big rig then collided with a pickup truck before coming to a stop on a nearby railroad track.

KHOU 11's Janel Forte reports a man later arrived at the scene after he saw it on the news. He said he hasn't heard from his wife, and she daily takes the route. He was later seen outside his vehicle crying.

The big rig driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the pickup driver was not hurt, police say.

The 18-wheeler is spilling fuel on the tracks, which will lengthen the time it takes to clear the crash.
