Highway 6 widening project in Sugar Land hits a snag

The project will expand Highway 6 from six lanes to eight on a stretch from Lexington Boulevard to Brooks Street.

SUGAR LAND, Texas — A major road construction project in Sugar Land has hit some delays.

The project will expand Highway 6 from six lanes to eight on a stretch from Lexington Boulevard to Brooks Street. That includes Sugar Land’s busiest intersection at Highway 59.

"It’s our understanding, talking to the state, that some underground utility conflicts caused some delays," said Doug Adolph, spokesman for the City of Sugar Land.

It’s not exactly the kind of news a lot of want drivers want to hear.

"Very frustrating for me. I wish they would finish it soon, please," said Sugar Land resident John Trevathan.

If drivers find the delays annoying, nearby business owners are worried about their bottom line.

Maye Bozorki owns three businesses right off Highway 6. He said the road construction is hitting him where it hurts.

"Unfortunately, since the construction started, we are off about 25 to 30 percent of our business,” Bozorki said. “And I don't know why the holdup."

Adolph said the issues involving the delays have been resolved, and the latest timeline for completion is December.
